Islands of Chess
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Islands of Chess is a multiplayer game inspired by chess. A board consists of multiple layers stacked on top of each other. As pieces land on tiles they begin to break. Once fully broken the piece will drop to the layer below. Take the opponent’s king to win the game
Controls
- Left Click - select tile/piece
- Right Click - move selected piece (to red or green highlights)
- Scroll - Pan the map up/down
- Ctrl + Scroll - Zoom the map in/out
How To Play
This game is networked and multiplayer. If you don't have a friend handy run the game twice and have one host, the other join. If you are hosting you may need to port forward (see notes). Once all players have joined and readied up the host can start the game.
The game has semi-normal chess moves with a few exceptions:
- Pawns can move backwards.
- If a layer exists below and your piece has a valid move (i.e. a piece of the same color is not there) it can jump down a layer
- Tiles have a health and will break if used over 4 times
- Once a tile breaks the piece landing on it will fall to the layer below.
- Moving a King in Check out of it is not required (but recommended)
- Once a King is taken, the game is over.
Notes
- To play without a friend, open the executable twice and join ip 127.0.0.1
- This will create a folder in your Documents called Islands-of-Chess where the server information will be stored. Feel free to delete when done
- If you are hosting externally you will need to port-forward port 5127 on your router. This isn't needed for local hosting
- Some normal chess moves are not implemented (such as pawn's first move going two spaces). This is due to time and the possibility for odd boards. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
Known Bugs
- Upon winning the game you aren’t able to restart. If you would like to play again restart the whole game
- Most illegal moves won't be caught (like putting yourself into check)
- If you drop down to a tile that is about to break, that tile breaks but the piece doesn’t fall again
